The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern were in despair when they found out that Amanda Staveley’s proposed takeover of the club had fallen through. Mike Ashley is hanging on as Newcastle United’s owner and the fans are urging him to spend some money this month or else risk relegation to the Championship again.
But Ashley is likely to restrict Newcastle’s spending to just loan deals. He is not willing to spend cash to bring in a new top quality player unless one of the saleable assets like Aleksandar Mitrovic, Dwight Gayle or Jonjo Shelvey is moved on. Therefore, Benitez must be desperately scratching around to fill some voids in his squad with loan additions.
One area that needs strengthening is striker. Dwight Gayle, Joselu, Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic are all reasonable enough players but none of them can score prolifically to keep Newcastle up this season. A new striker must be the Magpies’ priority to boost their survival hopes.
And Leicester City outcast Kelechi Iheanacho could be a decent option. He might not be favoured at Leicester with the likes of Shinji Okazaki and Jamie Vardy ahead of him in the pecking order but the towering Nigerian international could still be a decent player if he is given game time.
Newcastle must show their faith in him and he could be available on a loan deal with few clubs willing to match his transfer fee. Leicester paid big money for the former Manchester City striker, but they would not be able to recoup much of that fee if they sold him now.
Rated at £13.5m on Transfermarkt, this could work to Newcastle’s benefit as they look for an all round striker who has a point to prove and can fire them to safety.
