Why Tottenham simply must secure a summer deal for this 25-cap international

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker has been touted with a move away over the last week or so, and whilst the move isn’t particularly popular in the Transfer Tavern – our landlord thinks that it is a transfer that makes a lot of sense…

Contextually, from Mauricio Pochettino’s perspective, a sale would certainly seem to align with his method of thinking. Walker has, of course, been dropped in recent weeks in favour of Kieran Trippier, and that hasn’t been done just to send a message. Over the last few months, Walker’s form has been somewhat disappointing, whilst Trippier has gone from strength to strength. Walker’s main asset has always been his offensive flair, but Trippier is beginning to offer more in that regard as of late.

There has also been talk of a fallout between Walker and Pochettino, and that certainly won’t be conducive to long-term success. A reality of football is that the manager is the boss, and if there is a disagreement between a player and his manager – it is almost always the player that faces the consequences. Pochettino has always been a manager that has been famed for his man management – and so it is difficult to place the blame on his shoulders.

Elsewhere, you also have to consider the money that Spurs would likely get for him. A fee of around £35-40m has been mooted, and that is enough money to be able to improve Tottenham’s squad sizeably. When you consider Tottenham’s defensive line, Walker is undoubtedly the weakest link – and so if Pochettino is looking to improve his defence, it is the Englishman that will be forced to pay the price. That being said, if Trippier impresses in the coming weeks, perhaps Pochettino could look to invest the money elsewhere.

Whichever way you spin it, this deal looks like a win/win for Tottenham.
