£140,000-per-week midfielder could yet be at Arsenal next season – report

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned about how their squad is going to look next summer…

A number of players could leave the club at the end of the season, with several contract expirations on the horizon, and so a major squad reshuffle could be forthcoming.

Talented players like Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez all have deals that are set to expire next summer, and with no news of extensions yet, they are still on course to leave the club.

However, one player that could yet agree fresh terms is Mesut Ozil, at least according to Goal. Goal reports that Ozil is happy living in London, and has recently purchased a new house in the capital. At present, it is said, he has not ruled out staying at the club beyond the confines of his current contract.

His current deal, according to the Daily Star, is worth around £140,000-per-week.

His retention would be a massive boost for Arsenal, and not just with regards to his quality on the field. A few of the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have questioned Wenger’s ambition, and they’re convinced that Arsenal are no longer an attractive option for top players. Tieing down Mesut Ozil would be a fantastic way to convince them otherwise.

That said, if Ozil is to sign a new deal, Arsenal are going to have to cough up big money. In addition, in order for him to be worth the financial investment, his lull in form seriously needs to pick up. He has really struggled this season, and his poor form has done little to help Arsenal’s cause on the pitch.

That said, his quality is undoubted, and so it makes sense to keep him.

Landlord’s Verdict

Both parties are, seemingly, keen on an extension, but it would have to work for everyone involved.

Arsenal will want his form to increase, and that will be the bottom line for them. Ozil, though, will be demanding a wage rise, and it’s unlikely that one will come without the other.

Though he can technically agree a move abroad in just a few months time, there is more than enough time for Arsenal to agree fresh terms with him, and so if this report is reflective of reality, a deal could still be found.
