The latest player to be linked with the Old Trafford side is Italian international and Juventus man Claudio Marchisio, Sir Alex Ferguson reckons he is the player that can breath some fresh life into the United midfield.
Marchisio joined the Juventus youth academy when he was just 7 years old, and he broke into the first team during the 06-07 season when the club were in Serie B. Upon the clubs return to the top flight, Marchisio was sent on loan to other Serie A side Empoli, he then returned to Juve and has been an important part of their first team ever since.
He is an extremely tenacious and hard tackling midfielder and he has a fine footballing brain and can therefore read the game extremely well, this makes him particularly proficient at snuffing out opposition attacks and then setting up plays for his own team from deep. Throughout his career comparisons have been made between Marchisio and other Italian Manchester United target Daniele De Rossi.
Talksport claim that United had scouts to watch Marchisio take part in Juventus’ 2-0 win over Roma this weekend and that they passed on very positive feedback to the United boss upon their return. With the loss of Owen Hargreaves this Summer and with Darron Gibson not managing to take advantage of the opportunities handed to him lately it looks as if the Italian midfielder will be a potential target for the Summer.
United have also been linked to De Rossi, Lassana Diarra and John Obi Mikel in recent weeks and it looks clear that it is an area of the field that Sir Alex is keen to improve this Summer. Juventus are thought to have put a price of £15million on the 25 year old who’s contract runs until 2014 but are obviously not overly keen to allow the player to leave.
The hope for United however is that the hitch recently reported in contract negotiations may convince the player to move on. It would certainly be a good move for Marchisio, Juventus are currently trying to rejuvinate and turn themelves back into the force that they once were. The pull of Manchester United however would probably be too hard to resist since they are undoutdedly one of the biggest teams in the world. It would also benefit Sir Alex Ferguson’s side since he is exactly the sort of player they could really do with in their engine room, as an Italian international he clearly has ability and talent, but there maybe some around Old Trafford who believe they can do better.
With the possible retirement of Paul Scholes, and the loss of Owen Hargreaves the team really need someone in the engine room, and I think central midfield signings this summer are almost a certainty, and Marchisio could fit the bill exactly.
