Let’s be honest the January transfer window was a bit of a let down. When the biggest talking points were Louis Saha and Djibril Cisse, you know it’s been a quiet one. However, this summer’s transfer window is looking to explode, and one of the biggest transfers being mooted is Arsenal’s RVP moving on.
RVP has been a loyal, stalwart in the Arsenal side for 8 years now, and has embraced his role as star, captain and leader of the team. But surely his head will be turned when the Spanish Giants Real Madrid and Barcelona come calling, as the Metro reports they will.
The Mail today also tells that the clubs will have to pay around 30 million for the Dutch star. Some may see RVP as worth more than that (after all Andy Carroll and Torres were), but RVP has 16 months left on his Arsenal contract and has thus far stalled on signing a new deal. The club may rightfully worry about losing him for less as his expiration date looms near. It was under the same situation that Nasri left last summer.
If he were to leave what kind of state would it leave Arsenal in. Wenger’s stewardship has come increasingly under question this year, and it seemed at times Van Persie’s goals were the only thing holding the team together. If the team were to lose arguably their only real star, would it cause Arsenal to slip even further away from the Champions league teams?
But then again, we’ve seen Arsene work miracles with a small budget. Imagine what he could do with £30 million to spend over the summer.
The allure of Spain’s big 2 is still something that can attract the Premierships biggest stars, and Spurs and others will wait nervously to see who else the big 2 have their eyes on.
