Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce will be content with the performance of his side so far this season, with the Villains very much in contention for an automatic promotion berth.
Fourth in the table and just five points from second-placed Derby County, Villa on the surge, and fans here in The Transfer Tavern are praying that their side will be playing top flight football again next season. Our landlord caught up with a stray pair enjoying a quiet pint in the booth by the bar, engaging in a solid chat about the January transfer window. Fans know that loan signings will be the way forward this month, and expect Bruce to bring in at least two faces this month as he looks to prepare his squad for one final push for promotion. A number of players have been touted, by the pair cannot believe that the club haven’t been looking at Brighton forward, Sam Baldock (rated at £2.7m on Transfermarkt).
The 28-year-old enjoyed prolific spells with MK Dons, Bristol City and then the Seagulls before their promotion to the Premier League last season, where he has failed to make an impact on Chris Hughton’s squad. Sidelined by a calf problem in preseason, Baldock has failed to bounce back from the set-back, and has so far made just a single substitute appearance for the south coast side.
A loan move could be on the cards to help the player rediscover himself, and with his Football League track record of scoring goals for fun, Bruce would be mad not to consider a swoop for the player. Villa have lacked a goal scorer this season due to injury to Jonathan Kodjia and the poor form of Scott Hogan, and Baldock could prove to be the answer to Bruce’s Premier League prayers.
