Manchester United are making a move for Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen reports website CaughtOffside.com. among many others.
According to the website the £20 milllion rated 20 year old is already in talks ahead of a proposed move to Old Trafford. The article outlines that Eriksen’s departure is so probable that Ajax manager Frank De Boar has already secured a replacement in the shape of Adam Maher from AZ Alkmaar.
It seems that despite winning their second consecutive league title in May, Ajax seem to have to sell some of their most prized assets to balance the books. Club captain Jan Vertonghen has already been sold to Tottenham for £10m and there also rumours of defensive midfielder Vurnon Anita moving to the Premiership with Newcastle registering an interest.
Should Ajax sell Eriksen then they will be losing one of the best midfield prospects in Europe. In his last two seasons at the Amsterdam Arena he has scored 16 goals and provided 35 assists. Sir Alex Ferguson himself has been an outspoken admirer of the Danish international in the past, most notably after being impressed by the play-makers performances against United in last season’s Europa League.
Despite already bringing in Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell this summer, Ferguson has stated he still wants to bring in one or two more players before the transfer window closes. With the sale of Ji-Sung Park, and Darren Fletcher looking no nearer to a return to action after illness, more midfield acquisions could still be the order of the day.
However the fact that Ferguson likes Eriksen and Ajax have already sold some of their best talent does not a transfer make. There seems to be some conflicting articles seemingly suggesting that Eriksen is himself looking to move to United, and that they may not in-fact be tracking him.
In a piece in The Mail it is reported that Eriksen was to ask Ajax if Manchester United were one of the two clubs bidding for his services, after Zenit St Petersburg were revealed as being one of the clubs in talks for the play-maker. Eriksen has previously identified United and Barcelona as two clubs he would be interested in joining, according to the article.
In another article on the website Sportinglife Eriksen’s agent Martin Schoots is reported to have admitted being in contact with various unnamed clubs but that his client intends to stay at Ajax.
Schoots said “I can’t reveal details about which clubs we are in contact with. I can only say Christian wants to stay at Ajax.”
In my opinion I would guess that Manchester United were not one of the clubs in talks over him and as a result Eriksen has decided to stay at Ajax. However his agent did seem to leave the door open for a transfer in the future. He said:
“It is obvious that he will leave Ajax one day. Like other good players, it is natural for him to move on. I can’t predict the future and I don’t have an estimate for when he will finally leave.”
