It is fair to say that the Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern have been expecting far more from a few of their side’s signing over the last few years…
Louis van Gaal’s tenure at the helm was characterised by the disappointment that so often followed high-profile signings, with players like Memphis Depay failing to live up to expectation following moves to Old Trafford.
Whilst several deals appeared to carry very little risk, things often just haven’t worked out for them – and that is no more true than in the case of Luke Shaw.
Signed from Southampton for a fee of around £30 million, Luke Shaw looked destined to become a star in the Premier League – with the young Englishman expected to take over the mantle from Ashley Cole as the country’s best left-back – but it just hasn’t happened.
He has struggled with injuries and has often failed to hold down a spot in the first team, and his role under Jose Mourinho has diminished even more.
With so much disappointment, it would appear as though the Englishman is coming towards the end of his Man Utd tenure – with the Independent reporting that Shaw could be set for a summer departure.
According to the Independent, Mourinho is ready to sell the young defender at the end of the season and will listen to offers – with both Tottenham and Chelsea touted as potential destinations.
It will be a disappointing end to the tale for Man Utd, with the side beating a host of top level Premier League clubs to the signature of the coveted youngster. That being said, he certainly hasn’t been up to par in recent months – with his development stagnating given his lack of fitness.
He has made just 6 Premier League starts this season, and for a player of his potential – that is simply not good enough.
