21-year-old: This is why I simply had to leave Chelsea

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were pleased when Ruben Loftus-Cheek left the Blues on a temporary basis over the summer…

The Englishman is clearly a top talent, and he certainly has the ability to play for Chelsea, but he desperately struggled for minutes last season – and that was clearly a problem.

As a young player, you need to be playing regularly. This, Loftus-Cheek says, was a key motivating factor behind his decision to leave the club this summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Loftus-Cheek said:¬†“It’s tough being at Chelsea, I work hard every day in training, it’s a massive club with really good players. You don’t get the oppurtunity¬†every weekend”.

Elaborating on his decision, he said: “I think now is the time…to leave Chelsea and get minutes elsewhere”.

It’s a tough environment at Stamford Bridge, especially with so much expectation, and so it was difficult for Loftus-Cheek to ever really get a chance to impress.

Now, though, at Palace, he looks likely to get the opportunity, and that can only be a good thing for the Englishman.

Landlord’s Verdict

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is undoubtedly good enough to succeed at Chelsea, and a year away could be just what he needs.

If Conte spends the next season watching on and seeing what he can do, he won’t be able to ignore the relentless running and silky technique that the Englishman has in his locker.
