Now that Alexis Sanchez is signed to a long-term deal at Old Trafford, the Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern want Jose Mourinho and Ed Woodward to turn their attention elsewhere. More specifically, they want their attention to be turned to the future of David De Gea.
The Spanish international has become an indispensable member of the first team at Old Trafford, having been a regular under Jose Mourinho during his stint in charge.
The Sun reports that De Gea currently earns £210,000-per-week.
This news, then, will come as a bit of a mixed bag for the Old Trafford faithful. Certainly, the news that De Gea seems open to signing on again is great news. They clearly need to keep the Spaniard, and so in that sense, paying him a big sum makes sense.
However, this does have a danger of going down a concerning path. If De Gea agrees similarly massive terms, then the likes of Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial could look to follow suit – given that they have emerged as just as important to Mourinho’s plans this term.
Still, Man Utd will likely look to cut down his demands somewhat, and then they could look to seek a middle ground. Talks will likely be forthcoming, that much seems clear.
Landlord’s Verdict
In truth, De Gea is worth every bit as much as Alexis Sanchez.
However, Man Utd are treading a very slippery path, and so they can’t afford to be handing out massive contracts. In this case, though, perhaps it’s worth it.
Whether they agree to such a deal, though, remains to be seen.
