The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling pretty perky at the moment, owing to reports from the Independent that are suggesting that Thomas Lemar could prefer a move to Anfield this summer over any other potential switch.
It’s certainly great news for the Reds, and our landlord has been highlighting just why this would be such a big boost for Liverpool.
The most significant reason, undoubtedly, comes on the pitch. In terms of quality, they don’t get much better than Lemar. The Frenchman has been part of the spine at Monaco for a while now, and whilst many of his teammates moved on over the summer, he chose to remain. That certainly doesn’t take away from his quality, though, as he’s undoubtedly one of Europe’s best at what he does. Providing electric pace, technical brilliance and a real threat in front of goal, he’d certainly add an extra edge to the Liverpool attack. Moreover, given that he’s able to play across the attack, he’d offer Jurgen Klopp a real option in a variety of positions – which is something that Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are perhaps less efficient at.
Lemar’s desire to move to Anfield, though, is far more significant than just what a potential move could offer. Indeed, Virgil van Dijk’s arrival at Liverpool certainly seemed to suggest that Jurgen Klopp was making the club an attractive option again, given that he is one of Europe’s most consistent defenders, and Lemar’s interest would reiterate that stance. For too long, Liverpool have had to settle for scraps – in that they haven’t been able to compete for some of Europe’s best. That’s certainly changing, though, and Lemar would represent yet another example of that changing tide.
At 22-years-old, Lemar is an option for the present and the future, and the repercussions of any potential move would be huge. In van Dijk, Liverpool have a defensive spine for the next few years. In Naby Keita, when he moves in the summer, Liverpool could have a midfield spine for the best part of a decade. In Lemar, they would get quite the same – with the Frenchman the perfect player to build an attack around.
A move for Lemar would, undoubtedly, demand a huge fee, but Jurgen Klopp cannot underestimate how much of an opportunity this. Lemar is one of Europe’s most talented young players, and the mere fact that he is interested in a potential move is a huge boost. Now they must capitalize on it.
Liverpool fans – do you agree? Are we right on Lemar – is the perfect player to build your team around?
