The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were very disappointed when Nathan Ake departed Stamford Bridge earlier this summer…
Brought back to the club last January, the Dutchman was used sparingly upon his return to London, but a few fine performances left fans feeling very optimistic.
However, as quickly as he had returned he had departed once more – with the 22-year-old moving back to Bournemouth towards the start of the summer.
Though a disappointing move, the Chelsea fans in the pub were not too surprised given his lack of game time, and now the Dutchman has revealed exactly why he decided to leave the club.
According to the Daily Mail, he said: “The decision to come here was to be able to play more games…There are no guarantees that I will play coming here but if I train hard and play well then I will have a chance”.
Certainly, Conte proved last year that he didn’t have enough faith in Ake to utilise him regularly, and given that he is in a crucial period of his development, a move away definitely makes sense in that regard.
Chelsea now find themselves in a tough spot, with Nathan Ake the exact type of player that they are lacking at present. They’re short on the left-hand side, whilst their defensive depth, in general, isn’t particularly good, so it seems likely that another player will be signed to replace him.
Still, you can’t blame Ake, as he needs regular game time – but it is difficult to understand quite why he was never given a chance. He impressed whenever he played, but that was not good enough it seems.
Chelsea will now likely go and spend big on a replacement, putting the Blues right back to square one.
