23-year-old could be offered new deal amid Chelsea interest

This bizarre deal has taken another turn for the Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern…

Upon first glance, Chelsea’s reported pursuit of Burnley defender Michael Keane is a very strange one.

Keane, a 23-year-old relatively unproven defender, currently playing for a Premier League side battling relegation would almost certainly be out of his depth at a European powerhouse like Chelsea – right?

The Chelsea fans were against the deal when it was first reported, but after sitting down over a few drinks with our landlord – the deal has finally begun to make sense.

Keane would represent a good value and relatively experienced defender that, crucially, is of homegrown status.

That last point is particularly important – given that he will likely replace John Terry.  He differs from alternative targets in that he is already a Premier League defender – and thus would not need that adjustment period

However, just as the Chelsea fans in the Tavern were coming round to the idea – the deal could be off the table completely…

According to the Mirror, Burnley have no intentions of selling Keane – regardless of cost.

In fact, they are reporting that Burnley are ‘desperate’ for Keane to sign a new deal – and will likely offer him a bumper new deal as a result of his recent England call-up.

This is definitely a blow for the Chelsea fans in the Tavern – but it is not all bad news.

Crucially, Keane reportedly rejected a new deal over the summer amid interest from Premier League holders Leicester – and so he could follow suit should Chelsea follow up their interest.

The future of the deal is looking increasingly interesting, particularly given Chelsea’s reported interest in defender Leonardo Bonucci. Could Keane and Bonucci become the most bizarre central defensive pairing in history?

Chelsea fans – thoughts?
