It’s the start of a new season, but Michy Batshuayi appears to be in a very similar situation to where he was last term…
Much was made of the Belgian’s lack of action last season, with the forward typically cast aside in favour of Diego Costa up front, with just 1 Premier League start coming through the entirety of the campaign.
He did begin to impress towards the end of the season, whilst his efforts over the summer didn’t go unnoticed, but a poor start to the 2017/18 campaign has put him back at square one.
Despite his recent poor form, Lille have been touted with a move for the Belgian, with the French side reportedly ready to give Chelsea back what they paid for him last season.
If Chelsea could get in a replacement, it’s a deal that would probably make financial sense, but according to the Daily Mail, Batshuayi has no intentions of leaving the club. The Daily Mail reports that Batshuayi is ‘determined’ to stay at Chelsea this summer and fight for his place, with the 23-year-old clearly still hopeful of earning a starting berth at Stamford Bridge.
You certainly can’t fault the Belgian for a lack of trying, though it remains unclear just how much of a role he will get at Chelsea this season. Alvaro Morata will, of course, be their first choice – and Batshuayi’s role could well be determined by how well his striking rival does.
Still, he appears committed, and that can only be a good thing for Chelsea.
On his day, Batshuayi is one of the best young forwards in Europe, but he has done very little over the last year or so to suggest that he is good enough to be a regular at Chelsea.
An own goal whilst playing Tottenham has left fans questioning his quality, and whilst he should be given enough time to improve, it remains to be seen whether he will make it at Chelsea.
That said, if the Blues sign a replacement, perhaps a sale makes sense.
