The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted with the way that Michy Batshuayi ended the 2016/17 season…
Though he wasn’t given a chance for much of the campaign, he forced his way into the side towards the end of the season, and he duly repaid the faith. Scoring a couple of goals in the last few games of the season, then repeating a similar feat whilst representing Belgium, Batshuayi is certainly in a far better position now than he was a few months ago.
However, despite the improved form, the majority of the fans in the Transfer Tavern were expecting him to leave next season. It seemed clear that Antonio Conte wasn’t much of a fan, and so many in the pub thought that a loan move or even a sale might be on the cards.
However, according to Goal, that might not be the case. Rather, it is being reported that Batshuayi does want to play for Chelsea next season, but there is a rather big condition to his prolonged stay. It is said that he wants assurances that his game time will be based on merit, and with Romelu Lukaku touted to be coming in, he wants a fair shot at dislodging his Belgian compatriot.
Our landlord thinks that it’s a pretty reasonable request from Batshuayi, though he notes that a lot has to change for Conte to really treat him as such. Towards the end of last season, Diego Costa was really struggling to make an impact yet was consistently played ahead of Batshuayi. Next season, that simply cannot happen again.
The Chelsea fans in the pub are dreaming of a two-man attack made up of Lukaku and Batshuayi.
