Liverpool supporters have been deflated in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their team’s 18-match unbeaten run in all competitions come to a disappointing end courtesy of a 1-0 defeat at struggling Swansea City on Monday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s men hadn’t lost a match since going down 4-1 to Tottenham back in October, and even went into their clash with the Premier League’s bottom club off the back of beating runaway leaders Manchester City in their preceding outing. However, the Merseyside giants were poor and deservedly beaten by the Swans on Monday, with Alfie Mawson’s strike just before half time enough to secure all three points for Carlos Carvalhal’s side, in turn denting Liverpool’s top four aspirations.
Consequently, there have been some despondent Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few hours, many of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent comments from Juventus general manager Giuseppe Marotta for Premium Sport (via Sky Sports), in which he suggests that Reds midfielder Emre Can ‘could renew’ his contract with the Premier League club.
The 24-year-old’s future has been subject of speculation for a while now given his current contract situation, what with his deal set to expire in the summer and as of yet no extension agreed.
As such, Juventus have been one side reportedly keen on landing the Germany international, be it this month or in the summer, and while the Italian club’s general manager Marotta has confirmed his side’s interest in the midfielder, he also suggested that he could well stay at Anfield.
He said: ‘The interest is clear. We want to try and bring him to us, but we cannot do it because he currently has a contract with Liverpool.
‘He could renew it and, moreover, there are other teams interested in him.
‘I am stating this with full awareness that he might not arrive, but we need to have important objectives.’
And these comments are likely to intrigue and perhaps delight our resident Liverpudlians, who have seen Can become a hugely integral player under Klopp in recent seasons, whose departure would certainly leave a void in their midfield ranks.
Landlord’s verdict: Emre Can’s future at Liverpool has been in the news for a while now, what with Juventus reportedly keen on exploiting his contract situation to bring him to Turin.
However, the club’s general manager Giuseppe Marotta has cast some doubt over whether his side will indeed complete a deal for the 24-year-old, with the man himself suggesting that the midfielder ‘could renew’ his contract at Anfield.
And this may well come as a big boost to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and the club’s supporters, as Can has certainly proven his worth to the side in recent years, and would be a huge loss were he to leave.
And while Juve clearly remain keen on the Germany international, these recent comments could be the first indication that Can may well stay at Liverpool after all.
