The Premier League season gets underway this weekend, but the thoughts of the fans in the Transfer Tavern are still firmly focused on the transfer window…
Whilst there is just a few short weeks until it slams shut, some of the Premier League’s biggest sides still have a lot of work to do – with both Man Utd and Chelsea, in particular, needing to improve.
Chelsea have struggled to recruit this summer, and given the return of the Champions League, they desperately need to bring in a few more bodies, whilst Man Utd still have a number of gaps within the squad that need fixing.
Defensively, both sides have fairly similar needs, and so it came as no surprise to learn that they were targeting the same player: Sergi Roberto. The Barcelona man faces an uncertain fate this season, given that he may not be a regular starter for the Catalan giants, and the Premier League clubs could look to seize that opportunity.
The latest update on the matter is certainly interesting for both clubs, with Sport reporting that both Chelsea and Man Utd have made contact with the player, and significantly, there is set to be a meeting between the player and the club in the ‘coming days’ to work out his future.
Roberto may well want to stay at Barcelona, but a lack of game time could force him elsewhere, so it appears as though we are steaming towards a conclusion to this saga.
Whether this deal goes through or not remains to be seen, but there is no doubting just how impactful Roberto would be in the Premier League.
A versatile player, the 25-year-old is able to play in defence and midfield, and that is likely appealing to both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte as both look to muster up some additional squad depth ahead of the new season.
Both clubs are willing to offer game time, so if Barcelona are not willing to do the same, a move could happen.
