Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side edge past Merseyside rivals Everton 2-1 at Anfield on Friday night to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have enjoyed an excellent run of form in recent times by winning nine and drawing the other four of their last 13 Premier League matches, a streak which has seen them usurp both Arsenal and Tottenham to sit fourth in the table. And our resident Reds fans could be set to enjoy a cup run this season as goals from James Milner and Virgil van Dijk either side of a Gylfi Sigurdsson equaliser sealed a 2-1 victory for Klopp’s side on Friday, earning them a spot in the last 32 of the world’s oldest club competition, where they will face Alan Pardew’s West Brom.
Thus, there have been several thrilled Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, many of whom are likely to be intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a recent report from Gazzetta dello Sport, which suggests that Klopp is seeking to bolster his goalkeeping ranks with the summer capture of Roma’s Alisson.
The 25-year-old shot-stopper made the move to the Italian giants back in 2016 and has since kept 16 clean sheets and conceded just 39 goals in 40 appearances for the club, with nine clean sheets in 19 Serie A games this term helping the side to fifth place in the division.
And with Liverpool’s goalkeeping problems having been well documented in the last 18 months or so, it appears that manager Klopp is seeking to address those issues as recent reports suggest that he is interested in a summer move for the Brazil international.
But with French giants Paris Saint-Germain also thought to be eyeing up the 25-year-old, it remains to be seen whether Klopp can indeed bolster his goalkeeping ranks with the Brazilian’s signature.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool’s goalkeeping problems have been evident for some time now, with neither Simon Mignolet nor Loris Karius doing enough to banish any doubts over their ability.
And with Virgil van Dijk through the door to bolster the centre-back department, another area under intense scrutiny in recent times, it appears that manager Jurgen Klopp is indeed in the market for a new shot-stopper, with Roma’s Alisson reportedly one he wants at Anfield.
The 25-year-old has made a fine start to life at the Italian club, but reports that they may need to sell players before buying the summer must come as good news to Reds chief Klopp, but whether he can fend off Paris Saint-Germain to secure Alisson’s signature remains to be seen.
