£250,000-per-week player may want to be at Man Utd next season – here’s why that might be a good idea for Mourinho

According to the Daily Mail, Wayne Rooney may want to stay at Man Utd next season, and for Jose Mourinho – that actually might make a lot of sense…

To understand the reasoning for that, you have to recognise the situation within the current context at Man Utd. Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks set to leave the club this summer, which would mean that Man Utd’s only two options going forward are Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney. Rashford should be Man Utd’s first choice next season, he deserves that, but given how many games the club will play next season, they will need more than just the Englishman. Indeed, it would make sense for Man Utd to sign a new forward too – but even then – two forwards are not enough. This is where Rooney could come in. Though not a regular, he could certainly do a job when called upon.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s impending departure also leaves a leadership void within the Man Utd dressing room, and a departure for Rooney would obliterate that even further. It is such an important time for the club, and so to lose Rooney would be such a massive miss for the club. Add to that the idea of several new players moving to the club this season, and the Red Devils quickly begin to look like a completely different side. This isn’t a bad thing, but Mourinho needs to keep that balance of new and old talent.

Rooney, who reportedly earns £250,000-per-week, is a Man Utd veteran, and if nothing else, he has earnt enough loyalty to make his own mind up. If he makes the decision to leave, Man Utd should accept it – but if he wants to stay, it will be a good thing for the club.
