Now one from the ‘unexpected category’, or should that be the ‘not a chance in hell’ category. It has been suggested that Sir Alex Ferguson might turn to a former Liverpool player to solve his midfield crisis, told you it was unlikely.
Our friends at sportingo claim that the Old Trafford outfit are considering a surprise Summer move for Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano, the former Anfield hero will probably not be welcomed that warmly by the United faithful after some of his antics with Liverpool but he could definitely be beneficial to the side!
The 26 year old began his career playing with River Plate and then Corinthians before that slightly strange move to West Ham. His start to life in English football was not the best, he only managed 5 appearances during his time with the Hammers, but it is fair to say that things improved massively for the Argentinean at Anfield. He ultimately cost Liverpool around £18.6million after all sorts of legal wrangling.
He spent 4 seasons on Merseyside and became a firm favourite with the clubs supporters. His combative and determined nature drew him many plaudits and it was perhaps a shame that it all ended a little bit acrimoniously. Upon returning from the World Cup last Summer he told new manager Roy Hodgson that he wanted to leave the club and move on to a new challenge, he finally signed for Barcelona in August last year costing the Catalan club £22million.
His time at Barce has been slightly frustrating, he has not been a regular starter and has found himself behind local boy Sergio Busquets in the clubs pecking order. He has made 21 appearances in La Liga but many of those have been substitute appearances, and Sportingo reckon United are hoping to use the potential frustration he may be experiencing to tempt him back to England.
He is definitely the sort of player that the club could do with, a tough tackling midfield dynamo is something that they haven’t had for a long time. Having said that it would probably take a pretty big offer to convince his club to sell, it could take something in excess of £25million and I am unsure whether he is worth that sort of money.
He is also not a favourite with the United fans after some pretty tempestuous performances against the club during his Liverpool days, and whether he would want to play for the arch rivals of one of his former teams also remains to be seen, but in purely footballing terms he would be a decent if expensive addition.
I don’t see this one coming off myself, clearly Sir Alex Ferguson will want to strengthen the central area of his team this Summer, and Mascherano would do a good job, but I just think there is too much in the way to make this move happen.
