Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern were interested by comments made by one of their expensive recruits, who’s performances this season have led to a lot of smashed glasses in anger in the bar this term.
Depay has struggled to perform in his inaugural season in England and has lost his first-team spot to academy prospect Jesse Lingard in recent months, with no sign of the 22-year-old Dutch international working his way back into the side on a permanent basis.
When asked if he had lived up to his expectations at Manchester United, Depay admitted he had a lot of work to do.
‘No. Not yet. I know that. I will continue to fight for it. I have a lot of expectations on myself. That’s important. The club is busy and I am busy to improve it. I don’t want to put a date on it or say when [I will meet expectations] but it will come. Confidence will help and experience. You learn from your mistakes.’
Interestingly, Depay admitted that assistant manager Ryan Giggs, a legendary winger during his playing time at Manchester United, had been paying special interest in his development and the former Welsh international was helping him.
‘Ryan Giggs is a legend. He talks a lot with me. He gives me advice. ‘He experienced everything already so he can help me with those kind of things. I don’t want to go into details but he works a lot with me.’
Our landlord still sees a lot of potential in Depay, despite his struggles this season, and he feels long-term guidance from Giggs will help the youngster become a superstar.
