26-year-old hints that Chelsea are plotting a tactical shift next season

Antonio Conte really impressed the fans in the Transfer Tavern with his tactical awareness last season…

For much of last season, Chelsea looked incredible through their use of the 3-4-3 formation, so much so that a host of other sides in the Premier League followed suit as the campaign progressed.

However, defender Marcos Alonso has now hinted that the Blues aren’t looking to rest upon their laurels this summer, instead looking to improve and change their tactics accordingly.

According to the Evening Standard, he said: “It’s good to play in different ways. We are working on new things this year to improve as a team. That’s one of the main things for us.”

Quite what those ‘new things’ are exactly remains unclear, but with Antonio Conte proving his quality last season, you can bet that the Italian has something unique up his sleeve.

Landlord’s Verdict

Chelsea led the way tactically last season, and so it seems likely that many sides will look to replicate their success next season. As such, it makes sense for the Blues to evolve once more, though it will likely be a case of minor changes, rather than the wholesale changes we saw last year.

The Blues will likely stick to a formation utilising 3 central defenders and 2 wing-backs, but change could be forthcoming in the attack – with Michy Batshuayi and Alvaro Morata both likely desperate to start next season.

Alonso was a key part of that, with the Spaniard impressing everyone in the Transfer Tavern. Sure, he had little competition on the left-hand side, but he looked very comfortable in a new-look team, and he will no doubt be key next season too.
