The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were fearing the worst on Wednesday night…
Liverpool are one of Europe’s most recognisable teams, but have achieved limited success in continental competition lately. Rarely a major figure in the Premier League title race, the Reds have struggled to even reach Europe’s premier competition on occasion, though that has changed under Jurgen Klopp.
A fourth placed finish last term gave the Reds a chance to reach the group stages of the tournament, but not before a tough qualification game against Hoffenheim.
Arguably the hardest draw that Liverpool could have received, the Reds faced off against the German side on Wednesday night, and put in a fantastic performance. The Reds cruised through to a 4-2 win on the night, and following the game, Jordan Henderson has issued a warning to any teams that think they’ll be an easy team to face this season.
According to the BBC, Henderson said: “We let in a couple of goals so we have still got things to work on but overall we’re delighted to get back into the Champions League where Liverpool belong”.
He added: “Now we have got to do ourselves justice and win some games there. We’re in there and we’ve proved we can play against big teams. We’re happy to play against whoever we’re drawn against.”
Henderson appears fearless, and with good reason. Liverpool have made a decent start to the season, and a confident victory against Hoffenheim will only add to their positive thinking.
Liverpool are a historic side, and expectations will be high, but it’s clear that under Klopp, they have all the resources to succeed.
Liverpool won’t be the favourites this season, but that doesn’t bother Henderson. He’s expecting his side to do very well this year.
They’ve done well domestically so far this year, and if Sadio Mane and Mo Salah continue to impress, there’s a real chance that they’ll make a good go of it in Europe.
