The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned about their side’s defence at present…
Jurgen Klopp’s side have improved their attacking options with the capture of Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke, whilst a report from Bild has suggested that a move for Naby Keita could still be on the cards this summer.
That said, since Liverpool’s statement distancing themselves from a move for Virgil van Dijk, talk surrounding their central defence has grown increasingly quiet. Despite the fact that they have very few options in the position, it doesn’t appear as though the Reds are close to solving that issue, and their latest decision could well make their problems even worse.
According to the Sun, Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho’s exclusion from the Reds’ pre-season tour could spell the end of his tenure at Anfield, with the publication reporting that the club ‘want no more to do’ with the defender.
His exile from the first team last season always hinted at a similar conclusion this summer, but given Liverpool’s lack of defensive depth, a few of the fans in the Transfer Tavern thought otherwise.
Jurgen Klopp, though, doesn’t fancy the defender – and it appears as though he is going to have to move on.
In truth, it’s a strange move from Liverpool given that they are very short on defensive depth. Sakho impressed last season whilst on loan and is certainly good enough to play for the Reds.
That said, we don’t really know what has gone on behind the scenes between the player and Jurgen Klopp, and so if their relationship has broken down – Sakho was always going to be the person to depart.
Still, Liverpool’s defensive needs are clear, and with Sakho now likely not viewed as a solution, Klopp must look to invest in a new defender.
