The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly awaiting news of a new Chelsea signing…
Chelsea have spent big already this summer, but with a host of players leaving the club, it is clear that more is still needed.
The expectation of new signings, seemingly, extends beyond the confines of the Chelsea fans, with at least one player within the Chelsea dressing room also hoping for more.
Cesar Azpilicueta has been a model professional at Chelsea since his arrival, and according to the Telegraph, the Spaniard has called for more action before the transfer window slams shut.
He said: “So we need players. The young players need help from senior players, top players, not to rush them into a position where they are maybe not ready to go at the moment. It is something that the club is working on with the manager, and hopefully, we can get new signings in the next few weeks”.
Azpilicueta is clearly confident that his side will invest before the summer is out.
The need for depth is clear, though. Take Azpilicueta’s role within the squad, for example. He was arguably the Premier League’s best central defender last season, but a lack of depth on the right forced him to start as wing-back on the opening day. This is something that Antonio Conte will want to avoid this season.
Chelsea have been unfortunate with injuries over the last few weeks and months, but that’s no excuse.
The Chelsea board knew the situation heading into the season, but have yet to solve it.
It’s all well and good giving young players like Jeremie Boga a chance, but his appearance on the opening day was out of need, rather than want. In an ideal world, Conte will want to embed young players into a winning side, but until the board invests heavily, that isn’t going to happen.
