Though the Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are keen for their side to land a few new signings, they are even more desperate to ensure that some of their side’s most important players remain in London for the foreseeable future. In the past, Spurs haven’t been able to hold onto their best talents, with key men like Gareth Bale departing the club.
It will come as a boost, then, to hear that moves are being made behind the scenes to do just that.
According to the Independent, Tottenham are keen to tie down Toby Alderweireld to a new deal, with a meeting reportedly set for this weekend to discuss that very matter. Daniel Levy is set to meet Alderweireld’s representatives this weekend in an effort to iron out a new deal, with sources close to the player apparently revealing that a new offer could be ‘imminent’.
The future of Alderweireld has been a concerning topic at Tottenham for a while. The Belgian’s deal expires, at the latest, in 2020, and the prospect of the club losing him on the cheap is a worrying one.
Now, though, that is beginning to look unlikely to happen, with all parties seemingly keen to agree fresh terms.
He certainly deserves an improved deal, having cemented his place in the Tottenham first team and amongst some of Europe’s best defenders. Providing consistent defending, his partnership with Jan Vertonghen has been fundamental to Tottenham’s recent success.
Talks will need to go well for this deal to happen, of course, but it will be vital for Spurs that it is done.
If Tottenham are able to tie-down Alderweireld, it will go down as one of the best deals of the year.
They’ve really missed him over the last few weeks, given that he has been out with an injury, and that would be a sign of things to come if he left the club.
Levy clearly recognises his value.
