The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern think that Willian was unfortunate last season…
During the 2015/16 campaign, he was undoubtedly Chelsea’s most important player – but under Conte, he saw his significance reduce significantly. Having shifted to the 3-4-3 formation, Conte typically picked Pedro ahead of Willian, and so the Brazilian was often limited to roles from the bench in the Premier League.
However, the lack of faith doesn’t appear to have affected Willian’s aspirations for next season, with the 28-year-old recently detailing his expectations for the coming year.
Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: “I hope more goals come for me this season. I will try to beat the number I scored last season”.
Willian bagged 8 Premier League goals last season, alongside 4 more in the FA Cup, and so the Brazilian will need to perform well next season to get close to that number. He’ll be hoping to make a few more starts under Conte, too.
Willian was speaking following Chelsea’s first pre-season game of the Premier League season, which the Blues finished as 8-2 winners against Fulham. He bagged 3 of the goals on his own, so he is certainly making a good start to his pre-season campaign, and Antonio Conte will likely be hoping that that continues.
