Liverpool supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side lose 1-0 at Premier League strugglers Swansea City on Monday night, which brought to an end their 18-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their encounter in South Wales having not tasted defeat since going down 4-1 to Tottenham back at the end of October, and off the back of beating runaway leaders Manchester City in their previous outing. However, the Reds weren’t anywhere near their best on Monday and were deservedly beaten by the Swans, with Alfie Mawson’s strike just before half time enough to seal a vital three points for Carlos Carvalhal’s side, at the same time putting a slight dent in Liverpool’s top four hopes.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by a recent report from Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, which outlines that the Reds have suffered a transfer setback in pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore.
The 28-year-old made the move to the Parc des Princes back in 2011 and has since played a key role in their domination of French football, helping the club to four successive Ligue 1 titles between 2012 and 2016, as well as countless other domestic trophies.
However, the Argentina international has started just eight times in the league under Unai Emery this term and as such could well be headed for a move away this month, with Inter Milan reportedly in pole position to land the midfielder.
Nonetheless, reports also suggest that Liverpool tried their hand with a big money move for Pastore, only for the player himself to reportedly reject those advances, with the Argentine seemingly in favour of returning to Italy following a spell at Palermo earlier in his career.
And this news is sure to come as a big setback for Reds boss Klopp, who has just a few days of the window remaining to try and bring in reinforcements ahead of his side’s quest for success in the second half of the season.
Landlord’s verdict: Javier Pastore has been a stalwart of the Paris Saint-Germain team for many a year now, but this season has seen the 28-year-old fall down the pecking order under Unai Emery.
As such, the Argentina international’s future appears to be away from the French capital, with Inter Milan thought to be leading the race, yet Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool reportedly tried, and ultimately failed, with a bid for the midfielder.
Yet it was Pastore himself who reportedly turned down the Reds’ advances, leaving manager Klopp with just a few days left of the window to try and bring reinforcements to Anfield ready for the second half of the season.
