28-year-old reportedly makes big call in light of decision by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are hopeful that the Reds can add a few players to their arsenal in January. It’s been a pretty tough season so far for the Reds, but things appear to be on the up after a win against Southampton at the weekend. That said, it’s clear that a few major acquisitions are needed if they want to be able to compete at the top with the likes of Man City and Man Utd.

However, it’s a potential departure that has left the fans in the Transfer Tavern talking today. Indeed, at least according to the Mirror, Daniel Sturridge could be set for the exit door in January – with the Englishman reportedly deciding to leave the club in an effort to save his international career. It is said that Jurgen Klopp’s decision to utilise him as a fringe player has played a big role in his decision, with the forward clearly not happy at being a bit-part player.

Sturridge’s frustration will come as no surprise, of course, having previously been a crucial player for the Reds. Particularly under Brendan Rodgers and alongside Luis Suarez, Sturridge was incredibly important and became a lethal goalscorer, but alas, those days seem a long time ago now.

He’s had to compete with injury problems and Roberto Firmino this season, and his game time has suffered as a result. With no change on the horizon, a departure does make sense.

Landlord’s Verdict

Liverpool can’t really afford to lose any more players, and so Sturridge should only be sold if they can find a good replacement.

That’s going to be tough, though, particularly in January, and so this move is far from a foregone conclusion.

That said, if Sturridge is to have any chance of making it to Russia, he needs to play every week.
