The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned at the loss of Benjamin Mendy…
The Frenchman looks set to miss much of the campaign through injury, and that has left the club very short on options. Following the recent departures of Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov, the Sky Blues are short on depth on the role – with Benjamin Mendy expected to control the position for years to come.
Unfortunately, though, for the time being at least, that isn’t going to be the case. Fabian Delph has stepped up magnificently, and the likes of Danilo or a youth player could step in on occasion, but what Man City really need is a reliable solution.
According to the Daily Mail, that solution could come in the form of Ryan Bertrand, who the Sky Blues are said to be keen on. Significantly, though, a development in this story is likely to delight the Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern. The Daily Mail reports that Bertrand himself is open to the prospect of a move to the Etihad, which could make a deal significantly easier to secure.
Of course, realistically, Bertrand would become a backup option when Mendy does eventually return, but that doesn’t appear to be putting the Englishman off.
That said, Mendy would have a run for his money to get back into the team, with Bertrand arguably one of the standout members in the Southampton squad in recent years, and he has impressed on a national scale, too. He’s undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s best defenders, and so he’d likely be a success in Manchester.
Whether a move comes to fruition, though, remains to be seen.
Bertrand and Mendy are very different players, and so Pep Guardiola could utilise them differently upon Mendy’s eventual return.
The Frenchman is far more focused on attacking, whilst Bertrand is more of a defensive player – meaning that they could play different roles going forward.
That said, Southampton won’t want to sell, and so Man City will have to get over that major hurdle if they want to think about how they can use him.
