Liverpool are targeting a move for Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez, according to The People. Liverpool have reportedly been scouting the 20 year-old defender throughout this season and they are ready to firm up their interest with a bid for him in the summer.
Martinez has a release clause in his contract of £28 million, but it seems Liverpool are not put off by his price tag. Liverpool will continue to monitor his progress until the end of the season and they will be keen to beat off interest from several top sides in Europe for his signature.
Spanish heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid are also believed to be interested in Martinez and Liverpool know they will find it difficult to compete with those two sides in the transfer market.
Liverpool are in the market for a long-term successor to their ageing defender Jamie Carragher, who turns 34 next month and the reds look to have identified Martinez as the man they want at Anfield.
Despite being a defender, Martinez has been getting headlines for his goalscoring exploits this season. The Spaniard has scored two goals whilst playing in midfield for Real Sociedad this season, both from the halfway line, and Liverpool are no strangers to Spaniards scoring from that distance.
Martinez’s versatility is also one of his main assets, not only has he shown that he can operate at centre-half and central midfield this season, he has also played at left-back. Despite his £28 million release clause, Sociedad are believed to be willing to accept a bid in the region of £17 million.
