The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were expecting him to depart in January…
Linked with a move to Bournemouth, Asmir Begovic’s Chelsea stint looked over. Resigned to a substitute role, the Bosnian has failed to displace Thibaut Courtois between the sticks for the Blues – and for a player of his quality, a bit-part role was never going to be enough.
However, as January slowly creeped towards an end with little progress in sight – the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern slowly began to realise that the goalkeeper could stay at Stamford Bridge for the rest of the season – and this is a notion that delighted many.
After all, Begovic’s quality is clear for all to see – and whilst he has yet to become a regular starter for Chelsea – that does not take away from the fact that he is one of Europe’s best.
Begovic himself has remained fairly quiet on the matter, until now, and in an interview with TalkSport, the Bosnian has revealed his feelings on his failed move away from Stamford Bridge.
The 29-year-old said: “I think it bugs any professional when you don’t play regularly. What keeps me going is the chance of being able to lift some silverware and be part of a trophy-winning side so that’s a big motivation for me”.
He continued: “But in terms of moving clubs that is something that is obviously not an option now….I know my role within the team and the leadership I can bring”
Most in the Transfer Tavern are expecting Begovic to finally move on in the summer, but with reports linking Thibaut Courtois with a move away from Stamford Bridge – could there be an opportunity for Begovic to move into the Chelsea first team on a regular basis?
Our landlord thinks that it’s going to be a very interesting few months as Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation unfolds…
