Turksish side Bursaspor are preparing an offer of around £2m for Tottenham defender Sabstiaen Bassong, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Cameroon international is out of favour at White Hart Lane, with the likes of Dawson, Kaboul, Gallas and a fit Ledley King all preferred by Redkanpp in the centre of the Spurs defence. Redknapp is reportedly willing to sanction Bassong’s move to Turkey, however is believed to be wanting more than the £2m currently being prepared.
Spurs have been relatively quiet so far in the transfer window, and Redknapp has pointed to the lack of funding for player salaries as being key in such minimal activity. Redknapp has insisted that while the club is able to afford the transfer fees placed on some of their targets, the wages in demand from these players are causing negotiations to break down more often than not.
Earlier reports had suggested that Bassong may be used as part of a swap deal for some of the clubs transfer targets, however it seems that the club would perhaps benefit more through the sale of the 25-year-old, as such funds could be put towards the salaries of those ‘big’ names that the Spurs board are hoping to bring in. Spurs have been linked heavily with Emmanuel Adebayor, and the sale of Bassong would contribute at least some way towards the kind of wages that the Togo international is asking for.
Bursaspor were crowned Turkish champions in 2010, and have featured in the Champions League regularly in recent years. Bassong is believed to be keen on a move away from North London, with first team football almost certainly guaranteed as well as the opportunity to play in the Champions League. It seems if a compromise can be agreed between Bursaspor and Spurs over the fee of the defender then this deal would benefit all three parties involved. It seems we can probably expect the Turkish side to up their offer sooner rather than later, and the departure of Bassong could well trigger a late surge of activity in the transfer window for Tottenham Hotspur.
