Provided Chelsea make the Champions League and with Roman Abramovich’s finances any player arriving at Stamford Bridge is a possibility.
If AVB stays and Abramovich believes in him enough to back him all the way I feel Chelsea will have to buy a winger, centre midfielder and a striker, especially if Drogba or Torres leaves.
Chelsea do need some more squad players also, for instance a reserve left back who the manager won’t mind playing as Ryan Bertrand seems frozen out of the first team. Focussing on the 3 major signings needed I feel these three fit the bill under AVB’s philosophy.
Winger is a position that has changed dramatically over the years, with managers preferring wingers who can come inside and link up play rather than out for out wingers such as Gareth Bale. I disagree with this and feel Chelsea need a winger who stays wide, can beat a man, and deliver a good cross for the forwards.
Antoine Griezmann of Real Sociedad is a viable option, a 20 year old left winger who is renowned in Spain for his technical skill, pace, and dribbling ability. He has played 90+ times for Sociedad scoring 16 goals and providing 8 assists with does not seem alot but bare in mind he is only 20 and definitely has a bright future.
I feel Marek Hamsik is a perfect option for Chelsea’s centre midfield, now it seems the Modric saga has ended. At 24, he is on the verge of the prime of his career and has scored 46 times for Napoli from midfield. He can play as an attacking midfielder, in centre midfield or out wide in a three. He is a clever player who makes things happen in attack with clever passes and great vision.
He may be difficult to pry away from Napoli being their vice-captain and poster boy, but a deal would not be impossible and I’m sure a substantial offer would be accepted, maybe in the region of £25-30 million.
Finally, a striker. Now there are options here but I feel you can look no further than the man that caused Chelsea so much damage in the Champions League, Edison Cavani. The Uraguayan has scored an amazing 41 goals in 57 appearances for Napoli and showed with his finish against Chelsea he possesses a true strikers instinct.
The benefit of signing both Hamsik and Cavani is the vapour they already have with one another. They know how each other plays and it works judging by Napoli’s success. Cavani like Hamsik would be difficult but an offer of around £30-40 million would be too good for Napoli to refuse. The bigger issue would be fending off the likes of Manchester City for his signature.
If Roman Abramovich wanted another major spend up, Chelsea may decide to opt for the missing piece of the Napoli trio Ezequiel Lavezzi over Griezmann.
These deals would depend on whether Chelsea is in the Champions League and most importantly how much Abramovich really believes in AVB.
