Dimitar Berbatov told Manchester United this week that he will leave the club in January if they do not offer him a new contract.
With only 12 months to run on his £100,000 -a-week contract, the issue is of course pressing for Berbatov who finds himself currently out of the United team.
Here are the three teams who I believe will compete most seriously for the Bulgarian’s signature.
Anybody who has paid any attention to the Premiership this year can see what a huge loss Sergio Aguero would be to any side. Couple this with the exit of equally prolific strike partner Diego Forlan, it is easy to observe a void in Athletico’s attack. The £40m purchase of FC Porto’s Radamel Falcao will go a long way to filling that void, but with Athletico hoping to qualify for the Champions League this year, bolstering striking options come January may be just the ticket.
Though Bayern have free scoring Mario Gomez up front, with only Ivica Olic, and youngsters Thomas Muller and Nils Petersen on the books, Jupp Heynckes could well freshen up his options with a move for Berbatov. A league that Berbatov knows well from his successful time with Leverkusen, the Bulgarian could expect to fit right in at the Allianz Arena.
I believe Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi will be sold in January, back to Italy and probably with Juventus. If this happens, Villareal will have to scan the market for a top striker and Berbatov would have to be the near the top of the list of those attainable. Berbatov may see making an impression on La Liga as one final challenge having retired from international football.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
