30-year-old hints at Liverpool departure; Serie A side reportedly keen

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have spent the morning toasting to his remarkable career at Anfield…

Lucas Leiva has been at Liverpool since 2007, and in that time he has amassed close to 250 league appearance for the Reds. A powerful, technically gifted central midfielder – Leiva has been vital for the Reds for the best part of a decade.

It hasn’t always been easy for him, with the Brazilian having to battle against a number of injuries alongside an improving list of midfield rivals – but his pedigree speaks for itself.

A cult hero amongst the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern, Leiva’s contributions to the Reds will not be forgotten anytime soon – but it would appear as though his tenure at the club is coming to an end.

As per the Telegraph, Lucas Leiva has hinted that he could be set to leave Liverpool shortly. He said: “I have to think about my long term. I know I don’t have many years left here”.

He continued: “This is the best place for me to be right now. But I cannot tell you in two months’ time, four months’ time or one year’s time”.

Significantly, the Telegraph also note that it is understood that Inter Milan are keen.

Whilst Leiva does not specify when he could leave, the fact that his contract is expiring at the end of the season says a lot – and whilst he could yet extend it – our landlord thinks that it is unlikely unless he gets a continuous run of games.

Jurgen Klopp recently revealed that he is convinced that Leiva will at the very least stay at the club until the end of the season, which does seem to suggest that he rates the Brazilian highly.

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting him to depart at the end of the season, though they certainly wouldn’t mind seeing him extend his deal. After all, on the pitch, he has been fantastic in recent years…
