£30M & £200,000 pwk, But Would He Actually Cut It At Old Trafford?

A player who has been constantly mentioned in the media, usually with the sentence ending ‘to join United’, is Inter Milan’s Dutch master Wesley Sneijdier. With the Daily Mail reporting that Ferguson is keen to pursue the £30m transfer of the former Real Madrid playmaker, with the only issue being financial backing from the Glazers.

It is understood that Sneijder would favour a move to Old Trafford. The players current £170,000-a-week wages at the Nerazzuri are biggest hindrance to any possible deal. United’s American owners are likely to have to match Rooney’s £200,000-a-week to attract the Champions league winner to the theatre of dreams.

The midfield creator is seen as the long term replacement to Paul Scholes, although operating far further forward than the United’s legend’s career extending holding midfield role, their ability to find pockets of space and dictate the tempo of play is incredibly similar.

A product of the famous Ajax youth system, where passing in triangles was emphasised, always creating a safe option to pass to whilst keeping the play ticking over. The attacking midfielder’s calmness and intelligence allows him to receive the ball in remarkably tight areas whilst having the vision to spot the next phase of play before possession is even received. The artistry of Sniejder was integral to the treble winning success of Mourinho’s well drilled Inter Milan team during the 2009-2010 season.

Signing the Inter man would be a sign of intent from the Scot, having just guided United to a historic nineteen league titles. Its also the type of capture many United fans have been calling out for. Having failed to sign a ‘star’ name since the £80m windfall received from the departure of Ronaldo in 2009.

The likelihood of this deal relies heavily on the Glazer’s willingness to stump up the required funds. In doing so they may well quiet the echoing ‘love united, hate Glazer’ chants which tend to ring out around Old Trafford.
