Harry Redknapp’s search for a striker has hit yet another brick wall as Atletico Madrid look to have landed Porto star Radamel Falcao along with Espanyol’s Daniel Osvaldo.
Redknapp has been chasing a proven quality goal scorer for some time now but the closest he has come to sealing the deal is still his deadline day move for Giuseppe Rossi almost 1 year ago. With Defoe misfiring and Crouch uninspiring, Levy is willing to bankroll a big money signing to boost Tottenham’s goal scoring prowess and potentially keep Luka Modric a little happier.
Who better than last season’s Europa League winner Radamel Falcao to fill that hole in the frontline? During the 10/11 campaign he found the net 33 times in 36 appearances as Porto romped to a treble.
Unfortunately for Harry, Atletico Madrid have stolen in and all but secured Falcao’s services next season using the money they received from the Sergio Aguero deal. With approximately £36m to play with, Atletico met the asking price with minimal negotiations and are also hot on the trail of Daniel Osvaldo.
Osvaldo, an Argentina born striker playing for Espanyol in La Liga, fired in 13 goals in 22 appearances for the Catalonian club last season helping them place a respectable 8th. He has adapted well to life in Spain after an initial loan move from Bologna and has now emerged as a second striking option for Atletico.
Overall, it is another set back for Spurs who have had a remarkably quiet summer. They already possess a very strong squad however so additions must be made in terms of quality not quantity. Brad Friedel in goal is a good addition and one more player on top of the two youngsters they’ve signed would represent a decent summer of business for them.
Who would you like to see leading the line for Spurs this summer? Who else is out there?
