Who could have predicted how poorly Gonzalo Higuain’s spell at Chelsea would go? When he moved to Stamford Bridge, he looked like the perfect fit. He was a star under Sarri previously, he knew the system, and the Blues were in desperate need of goals. What could go wrong?
Well, as it turns out, pretty much everything. Higuain’s spell at Chelsea has been an unmitigated disaster, with a good performance against Huddersfield really the only real vision of the Argentine at his best.
Since that point, games have passed by in which he’s not looked at the races, and in truth, it’s been obvious that he’s just not up to par anymore. Whether it’s a lack of fitness or another factor, his lack of form is most telling in the shape of his lack of energy – and that just doesn’t work in the Premier League.
At present, it’s looking unlikely that he’ll be at Chelsea next season, but he still has a chance. The Blues have the ability to extend his loan if they so choose, but on current form, that would be foolish.
However, with 4 Premier League games left, it’s not impossible. If he’s able to score a few goals, starting in the Europa League on Thursday, to prove that he’s improving as a player, perhaps he’ll get another opportunity next season.
The rest of the season is crucial for the Blues, and if they win every league game, there’s still a chance that they can finish in the top four. If Higuain can lead them to that – he’ll still deserve another season in London.
