It now looks as if there could be a four-way scrap for Wayne Bridge in January. A few questions though: who wants him? Where will he go? Where should he go? And why would anybody want to sign him??
After reportedly turning down a loan offer from West Ham – that’s fair enough, don’t really blame you on that one Wayne – reports today show that Juventus are interested, looking to replace Fabio Grosso as he possibly moves to Malaga. This could be a brilliant move for Bridge, as his ‘international’ days are over so maybe he should try pastures new, and Serie A could be the perfect challenge for him as he looks to prove himself as a credible left-back once again.
But, apparently Valencia and Aston Villa are also interested – though with Gerard Houllier’s future in doubt, you do wonder who Bridge could be playing for at Villa Park if he moves.
But more to the point, why would anybody want to sign him? He’s obviously past it now, and was always a solid performer rather than an exceptional left back, defensively or going forward. He’s had his problems off the field and his move to Man City suggested to me that he wanted the money rather than a challenge, and that he couldn’t keep his place when better players and more competition arrived. Still, if you want an experienced left back and you don’t mind a bit of mediocrity, then Bridge is definitely your man.
