The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling pretty concerned about their side’s prospects this season, despite the fact that they have been an established Premier League side since their promotion in 2012.
Over the last year or so, they have been on a steep downward trajectory, and unfortunately for them, there is no sign of it slowing down.
This weekend, they’ve got another chance to put things right, but given that their opponents, Arsenal, have been improving over the last few weeks, the chances of that happening appear to be slim.
Nonetheless, Mark Hughes will need to try his best to pick up a valuable point or three, and so his team selection must be perfect.
One player that faces an uncertain fate is Manolo Gabbiadini, who is rated at £13.5 million by Transfer Markt. Though he started his career at Southampton expertly, he has slowed down this season, and his form has been poor as of late.
He started in Southampton’s last game against West Ham, but his form hasn’t been good enough this season, having bagged just 4 Premier League goals.
We recently questioned fans, then, on the prospect of him being dropped this weekend, and it’s fair to say that there is a sense of division amongst supporters. 41% of fans have called for him to get dropped, whilst 59% of fans have voted to the contrary.
Clearly, then, fans aren’t quite sure to make of him. On his day, he’s an unstoppable player, and if he turns up as he has in the past against Arsenal, their faltering defence may not be able to handle him.
However, those who voted for him to get dropped clearly aren’t convinced, though a lack of other options may give Mark Hughes a headache.
The Welshman will, of course, have the final decision, but if he selects Gabbiadinji and the forward fails to impress, we’re expecting an army of frustrated Saints in the Transfer Tavern.
