Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have been overly pleased with the club’s transfer business so far this summer although the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona last week raised a few eyebrows.
The Belgian lost his regular first team place to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker last season and was unhappy at acting as third choice centre back at the Emirates Stadium.
Barcelona’s £15 million offer was accepted and the Gunners are now in the hunt for a replacement for their club captain.
The name most heavily linked has been Liverpool centre back Daniel Agger.
The Danish international is another who has openly stated he is not happy playing as a third choice defender at Anfield, whilst the Reds have added £20 million defender Dejan Lovren since.
With Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel, Kolo Toure, Sebastian Coates and Lovren still on the club’s books, Agger looks the most likely to depart.
But whether Liverpool would be willing to sell to a direct rival remains to be seen – especially after the Luis Suarez saga last summer which ended with the Gunners bid of £40 million and £1 being rejected.
Here, we have identified five alternative defenders Arsene Wenger should look to sign, should Liverpool refuse to sell Agger to Arsenal.
