Punters in the Football Transfer Tavern are wishing Steve McLaren a Happy 55th birthday!

In celebration we are looking at some of the biggest blunders he has had in football.

This season poor old Steve has had a tough time in the Premier League and he was put out of his misery back in March, when he sacked by Newcastle after leaving the Magpies staring relegation in the face.

The former England boss managed to win just six of his 28 Premier League games, meaning they were just one point off the foot of the table, but now they are just out of the relegation zone, thanks to Rafa Benitez.

This season's pain hasn't been the only nightmare he has in his career, and punters in the Tavern have been giggling as they've reminisced their favourite memories of McClaren.

And it's been George Boulton's job to round up their top FIVE memories of the Walley in the Brolley......

Wally with the brolly

The first thing that comes to everybody's mind in the Tavern when you think about Steve McLaren is that dreadful night against Croatia when he picked up the nickname "Wally with the Brolly".

It was a bleak night for England as they miserably lost 3-2 to Croatia which meant the Three Lions missed out on qualifying for Euro 2008, which subsequently cost him his job.

But something which somehow overshadowed England's shocking failure to qualify for the tournament was McLaren's choice to use a Brolly to shelter him from the rain at Wembley.

He is still mocked for this moment and this season Sunderland fans chanted ‘Don’t sack the wally, the wally with the brolly’ to the Newcastle board as they were enjoying Newcastle's demise early on in the campaign.

McClaren 'Dutch' accent

Possibly the funniest and most bizarre moment from McLaren's career to date was, when he seemed to put on a fake Dutch accent during an interview, whilst he was in charge of FC Twente.

It was ahead of a Champions League qualifier against Arsenal, in a tie which the Gunners unsurprisingly dominated as they progressed with a 6-0 lead on aggregate, including a 4-0 win at the Emirates.

McLaren seemed to learn his lesson and sadly didn't attempt a Geordie accent during his time at St James' Park...

McClaren confident he could keep Magpies up

mcclaren422

This is his most recent gaffe to date.

After being sacked by Newcastle he shamefully said he was confident that he would have kept the Magpies up if he wasn't sacked.

Let us just remind you that this after he left them a point off Aston Villa at the bottom of the table and winning only six times after 28 games.

“I am obviously very disappointed with the decision,” McClaren said via a League Managers’ Association statement.

“I appreciate any frustrations relating to the team’s results and the club subsequently finding itself in a battle to avoid relegation.

“I remain confident, however, that we would have stayed in the Premier League with a view to building for next season.”

Derby County capitulation

Punters in the Tavern were left questioning how on earth Derby bottled promotion under his tenure last season.

He took charge at the iPro Stadium in September 2013 and in his first season they narrowly missed out on promotion after losing to QPR in the Championship play-off final.

But the following season the Rams looked on course to clinch automatic promotion as champions after leading the Championship in March but after a incredibly poor run of form, they finished in eighth place and missed out on the play-offs...

How did they manage that!?

Pink ties incident....

Then last but not least, when Steve McLaren kicked up a fuss after it came out his Middlesbrough side would wear pink ties with their suit ahead of their Carling Cup final against Bolton in 2004.

The decision was made after the players were advised by their outfitter that pink would work best with their grey Hugo Boss suits and pale blue shirts

"Pink?!" exclaimed McClaren after he was informed of the colour scheme.

"I preferred red, but I have been out-voted. Surely as manager I should have had the final decision."

McLaren managed to shake off this niggling issue as his side managed to overcome Sam Allardyce's Bolton at the Millennium stadium with a 2-1 win.
