Whilst the recent transfer window proved to be mainly a quiet one for most teams, Newcastle United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern were left reeling after the loss of one of the best players.
After much speculation and long-term interest, French midfielder Yohan Cabaye left St. James’ Park to join Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
No one could really begrudge him a move back to his native country, especially in the a World Cup year, but with a few days left of the transfer window surely a replacement could be found?
Unfortunately for the Magpies supporters in the bar, the deadline ticked down and then passed without Alan Pardew or then director of football Joe Kinnear being able to recruit a suitable replacement for the former Lille man.
Kinnear was then finally given the boot for a six-month back-room performance lacking in well, anything, much to the relief of Geordies sat around the tavern.
A lack of contingency plan has seen the Magpies lose their last three matches, conceding a depressing 10 goals, including three in a miserable derby day defeat to arch-rivals Sunderland.
Now they are hoping/praying that by the summer the club will have been able to find at least one suitable replacement for Cabaye.
And now we’ve decided to given them a helping hand by outlining five players who would fit the bill at St. James’ Park.
