Jose Mourinho has been busy telling anyone who will listen that his Chelsea side should not be considered title contenders this season, going as far to strangely label his side ‘a little horse’ in this season’s title race.
Whilst the ‘Special One’s’ attempts at mind games don’t seem to be working too well on anyone, the point he is trying to make is that his team remains a work in progress.
The likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, and Nemanja Matic are all young players with bags of talent that are likely to be the base of Chelsea’s future line ups under Mourinho.
Jose has been tasked with rebuilding a Chelsea side that had struggled to let go since his first coming between 2004 and 2007.
Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole all remain from his first successful spell in charge, with the latter the most likely to be the first to depart.
Cole has found first team opportunities hard to come by under Mourinho this season, with Cesar Azpilicueta getting the nod at left back more often than not.
The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and talks are yet to begin over a possible extension.
The fact the Blues have also been extensively linked with a number of new left backs does not bode well for Cole’s Chelsea future.
So here we have identified five possible candidates to plug the Chelsea gap, should Cole jump ship.
