As anyone in the Football Transfer Tavern would tell you, Chelsea have had a rather interesting run in Europe over the last couple of seasons. Now that Jose Mourinho is back at the helm we don’t expect this to change any time soon.
Having finally won that elusive crown and become champions of Europe after the most dramatic of all Champions League finals in Munich back in 2012, Chelsea then went on to place Rafael Benitez at the helm.
A rather unpopular move, yet one that saw the club win the Europa League last season. As our landlord notes whilst pouring a pint, that was simply not good enough for Jose Mourinho who made fun of the trophy and noted that it was not a trophy that Chelsea should be winning.
Most fans would agree with the Special One, who has two European Cups under his belt – and has not won one since his victory with Inter Milan over Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu in 2010.
Mourinho will be looking to really make an impact on Europe with his Chelsea side this season. Despite telling Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti that he will bring Chelsea to the final in three seasons time – held at the San Siro, we all know that Mourinho believes his Chelsea side can win it all this term.
Firstly they will have to get through their group – which whilst not being as difficult to negotiate as the one Arsenal have found themselves in, is not the easiest of the bunch either. With that in mind, here are five players that Jose Mourinho and Chelsea need to watch out for this season in Europe.
