We are only just getting used to the Premier League being back here in the Football Transfer Tavern after the international break.
However, as we see our landlord put up a huge list of Champions League specials on the offers board – including a three for one shot deal if Fernando Torres scores – we are reminded that the biggest competition of all is about to start again this week and we are getting rather excited in anticipation.
Manchester United are of course ever presents in the competition, and much to the annoyance of the rest of the Premier League – especially Manchester City – the Red Devils find themselves once again in a group that they should be able to navigate quite comfortably. Of course we say this, but then one of our punters reminds us of the trouble caused by the mighty Basel a few seasons back.
The 20 times champions of England find themselves in a group with Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayer Leverkusen and Spanish side Real Sociedad – last season’s surprise package in La Liga – and unlike Arsenal who find themselves in the group of death, they know little of the players owned by their opponents.
With that in mind, we have taken time out from our game of pool to sit around the bar, take advantage of the free peanuts and compile a list of the five players that Manchester United fans should make themselves aware of this season in Europe – well in the group stages at least.
As one City fan quips, hopefully by the time the knockout stages come around, they will have to worry about someone we have actually heard of.
