5 ‘desperate swoops’ to address the Debuchy misery at Arsenal

Diego LuganoArsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are pretty downbeat it has to be said.

This is following the news that Mathieu Debuchy is set to miss up to two months of the season with a sprained ankle.

The Frenchman was carried off on a stretcher in the dying minutes of the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Manchester City at the weekend and Arsene Wenger is now down to just three fit defenders for tonight’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.

In fairness, it is hard to have any sympathy with the Arsenal boss.

Despite having sold captain Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona in the summer and having plenty of time and money to spend, the Frenchman failed to recruit a new centre back.

And with the Gunners’ annual injury jinx striking extra early this season, Wenger may be forced into a desperate move for a free agent.

Free agents at this point in the season are few and far between and those that are available are not the most popular.

But desperate times call for desperate measures, even if it is a situation of the clubs own doings.

Here, we have identified five free agent defenders Wenger may well be forced to call upon outside of the transfer window.
