Whilst most of the talk in the Football Transfer Tavern regarding Liverpool has surrounded the possible departure of Luis Suarez, our landlord is quick to point out the Reds have done some good business already this summer.
Twenty-year-old German midfielder Emre Can became the clubs third signing of the summer late last week, following Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana to Anfield.
Can has signed for a fee of £9.75 million from Bayer Leverkusen, and arrives with a reputation as one of the most promising young players in Germany, having previously been on the books at Bayern Munich.
Can was managed at Leverkusen by former Reds skipper Sami Hyypia, and the Liverpool legend reckons he will prove to be a huge hit at Anfield.
Hyypia said: “Emre is one of those players that always gives 100 per cent on the pitch. He is a very dynamic player and he is quite mature physically as well.
“He is quite a technical player and he does the simple things perfectly, with 100 per cent concentration, and I think he will have a great career at Liverpool.
“With the work ethic he has, I know the Liverpool fans will love him. He needs to make this next step forward in his career and Liverpool is a great club for him to continue to improve.
“He’s also very skilful and he can play it very simple. I think he suits the Liverpool style of play and physically he can compete in the Premier League for sure.”
Despite the words of praise, Can will be under pressure to hit the ground running at Anfield. We have identified five former Reds he would do well to avoid studying for inspiration!
