Manchester United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are buzzing for the new season, first and foremost because they know it can’t possibly be as bad as 2013/14.
Also because Ed Woodward seems to have finally grasped the concept of his job description, having delivered a couple of big money signings.
One of which is the capture of Luke Shaw from Southampton, with the teenager making the switch to Old Trafford for a massive £30million.
It has been an incredible year for Shaw – he got his first England call up, was selected for Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad, and has become the highest paid teenager in Manchester United’s history.
You would think that would be enough to phase anyone, especially considering Shaw is still just 18-years-of-age.
He seems to have taken everything in his stride thus far, but next season will be a massive test given the huge step up and massive price tag looming over his head.
Manchester United have a history of world class defenders, of which two have departed this summer, with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand bringing down the curtains on their glittering Old Trafford careers.
Shaw would do better to look to those two for inspiration, rather than the five former players we have identified as players he won’t be looking to emulate.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
